Lazise

Culture

Lazise is a gorgeous town steeped in centuries of history. From humble beginnings as a group of stilt houses, through clashing Roman, Venetian and Austrian rule as a poor town of fisherman and farmers. The town has now developed into one of the most picturesque and captivating highlights on the Lake.

Track the progression of the town through the diverse architecture as you explore everything from the grand Piazza Emmanuele to tiny, winding, cobbled streets. Discover the Romaneque church of San Niccolo and appreciate Giotto frescoes dating back to the 12th century. Try to figure out how San Martino church was rebuilt in neoclassical style in the 18th century, in the place of the church of San Zeno dating back to the 15th century without leaving any ruins!

Stroll around the town walls and take in the awesome sight of one of the four incredible Scaligeri Castles on Lake Garda. Then rest and recoup in one of the many cafes and restaurants before investigating the boutique art and handicraft shops and picking up some local produce.

Why not try -

  • sample the locals’ favourite, Classique restaurant, in its elevated position above the lake
  • take a walk further afield to the Villa Pergolana, towards Bardolino, built in a renaissance style in the 14th centaury century
  • head to the Venetian customs house originally used to control the passage goods on the Lake. The building was then turned into a cotton textile mill and later became the Fascist Party headquarters. Renovated in 1973, it is now used for exhibits and cultural events.
