A melting pot of cultures and treasures left behind by various conquerors, including the Venetian’s and Austro-Hungarian empire until the town became part of Italy again in 1918. Fortresses defending the town built as early as 1124, churches and intricate architecture are in tact and a delight to stumble upon. Lose yourself in the cobbled streets discovering shops and relax in a cafe on the lake front for a well deserved ice cream.

  • Via flume, just off Piazza 3 Novembre , winding into the heart of the old town flanked by historic buildings, you can smell the leather as you work your way up, passing countless handbag, spices and ceramic shops.
  • La Rocca fortress, now home to the local museum dating back to 1124, this beautiful land mark surrounded by a moat is a must on your to do list.
  • Santa Maria Church with its striking baroque style provides a stunning back drop to enjoy a glass of Prosecco and nibbles in a nearby café.

    With the dramatic back drop of the Rocchetta Mountain reaching up into the baby Dolomites, winds of all proportions unfurling a multitude of coloured sails onto the lake make Riva the perfect setting for a fairground of thrilling activities.

    • Via Ferata: Italian for iron road. Various routes litter the mountainside with spectacular views of the lake from dizzy heights. Ideal for of all levels of climbers and even novice walkers to enjoy, guides are also available.
    • Cycling: A hub for cyclists, Riva is the starting point for many a race. Stay local and explore well marked cycle paths leading you around vineyards, the Varone waterfalls or the village of Arco for a well earned al fresco lunch in a piazza.
    • Mountain biking: Take the challenging Ponale road up into the Rocchetta Mountain for some breathtaking views of the Lake and the picturesque town of Riva stretched out below.
    • Sailing: Set sail for a whirlwind joyride or take the helm yourself for a taster or intermediate lesson. Take your pick of boats from Dinghy to a Catamaran for an exhilarating experience in a stunning location with guaranteed wind.
    • Wind surfing: :With the gentle morning Peler wind, Riva is the perfect location to dabble in this tremendous sport. In the afternoon as the Ora wind sets in really pick up the pace and surf the waves.
    • Rock climbing: Head to Arco where the Climbing World Championships will be held in July 2011. Visit the local climbing school with excellent facilities and a variety of thrilling climbing routes in stunning locations for all abilities.
