Culture

Founded during Roman times, 'Fair Verona' is home to Italy's third largest, and best preserved amphitheatre. Now host to the International Opera Festival, don't miss out on the electrical atmosphere seeing some of the world's finest Operas amidst 20,000 spectators. Wander through Piazza Bra, bustling with outdoor diners, enjoying Veronese specialities such as rissoto radicchio or bigoli pasta, washed down with the local Valpolicella or Soave wines.

Strut your stuff on the russet marbled streets of Via Mazzini - the place to be seen in early evening, where you'll find Gucci and Versace's shop windows filled with the latest must-have designs. Haggle for a souvenir in the bustling market at Piazza Erbe, before wandering down the side streets to find the house of Juliet, an elegant balcony hangs above the courtyard, the supposed inspiration for Shakespeare's 'star cross'd lovers'. Peek at some of the hundreds of love letters adorning the walls - left by today's romantic couples hoping for Juliet's blessing.

Why not try -

  • Climbing the 12th century Torre dei Lamberti, Verona's 83m high belfry for dizzying views over the city's grid of streets.
  • Exploring Verona's largest gothic church, Sant Anastasia - look out for the font held up by hunchbanks. Don't miss the contrasting Romanesque church of San Zeno Maggoire, one of the most significant in Northern Italy
  • Wander down to the banks of the Adige to discover the history of the Castelvecchio fortress, the Della Scala family's and subsequent rulers' stronghold - now the City Museum and home to priceless artworks
