Founded during Roman times, there are still many ancient monuments to be seen including the Arena, famous for its summer opera performances. Verona also has preserved castles, a fascinating medieval city centre, which is now pedestrianised and comes alive in summer with open air markets and of course 'Juliet's balcony' - made famous by William Shakespeare's 'star-cross'd lovers', Romeo and Juliet.
