As you’d expect from a city, Venice is packed with bars, restaurants and cafés. From Italian fine dining to Spanish street food, and restaurants on every corner, there's lots to try. Be sure to try some Cichetti, the local version of tapas, for something uniquely Venetian. As Venice is surrounded by waterways and the sea, a lot of eateries will have views of the water, though try to avoid the Piazza San Marco as it’s quite costly, and beware of sitting down in certain bars – you may have to pay.
At the foot of the Rialto Bridge is Antico Caffe Ristorante al Buso, a traditional Italian restaurant offering views of the waterway and the passing gondolas. With reasonable prices and efficient service, it’s nearly always busy, so be prepared to wait.
Great for romantic meals and birthdays is the waterfront Ristorante Riviera. This fine-dining restaurant prepares unique dishes and even offers a tasting menu if you want to try a bit of everything. The service is very attentive – the owner will even escort you to your gondola when you leave.
In Cannaregio is the small but extremely popular Cocaeta crêperie. Whipping up an extensive range of sweet and savoury pancakes with fillings like chicken, pesto and cheese and the typical banana and nutella, these crêpes are said to be the best in Venice.
Getting around Venice’s winding cobbled streets and alleyways is easiest on foot – and you’ll see lots more that way.
Water buses, or vaporetti, are a really fun way to get around. They’ll take you all the way along the Grand Canal and out into the Venetian Lagoon. Gondolas are more expensive but more romantic. Boats tend to get very busy during peak times, so try to use them in the early morning, at lunchtime or at night.
From Venice, you can catch trains to many other places in Italy, and over the borders too. You can also take a trip to the stunning Lake Garda if you want to get away from the city.
